We have a favorable demand environment for automobiles, but the growth of Africa’s automobile industry has not been great and thriving as expected.However, some car manufacturers have contributed significantly to the industry.
Unfortunately, they do not get the mentions and the much-needed patronage we give to the Asians and the western automobile industries like Toyota, Mercedez Benz, Ford, and co.
Notwithstanding, Cars produced by these car manufacturers are used by many people in the continent and around.
10) INNOSON VEHICLE MANUFACTURING CO, LTD. (NIGERIA)
Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Co, LTD (IVM) is a Nigeria-based company that was founded by Nigerian industrialist Chief Innocent Chukwuma but the automobile company was commissioned by former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Their manufacturing plant is in Anambra State, Southeast Nigeria. IVM Umu and IVM Uzo are the company’s models. Nigeria is encouraging local manufacture of automobiles and discouraging import of wholly assembled automobiles.
9) WALLYSCAR (TUNISIA)
Zied Guiga founded Tunisian car maker Wallyscar in 2007. The company is based in La Marsa and sells 600 units per year.
Not only do they sell them in Tunisia but in countries like Qatar, Morocco, France, Spain and Panama.
8)KIIRA MOTORS (UGANDA)
Originally developed by students from Uganda’s Makerere University for a project headed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the sedan hybrid electric vehicle called the Kiira EV SMACK was designed for the region, local terrain and consumers’ ability to afford the car.
The five-seater sedan is powered by a rechargeable battery and also has an internal combustion engine-based generator which charges the battery.
The first commercial vehicle from this line is expected to roll out in 2018.
7) KANTANKA AUTOMOBILE COMPANY (GHANA)
The Ghanaian based automobile company founded by Apostle Safo Kantanka, assembles its passenger vehicles (mainly SUVs and pickup trucks) at the company’s manufacturing plant located in Gomoa Mpota in the central region of Ghana.
The automobile company released commercial sale of the vehicles last year ,2016.
6) ADVANCED AUTOMOTIVE DESIGN (SOUTH AFRICA)
Founded in 1995 by Brian Glover and Rhys Edwards, advanced Automotive Design is a South African automobile manufacturer.
It is located in Die Wilgers, Pretoria. Shaka Giotto and Shaka Nynya are the company’s popular models.
5) BAILEY EDWARDS CARS (SOUTH AFRICA)
Bailey Edwards Cars is a well-known sports car manufacturer is South Africa. The company has been producing sports cars for the race tracks and for the road.
The brand has excelled against strong competitors in the sports car market.
4) SAROUKH EL-JAMAHIRIYA (LIBYA)
This sleek James Bond-style car was unveiled in 1999. Dukhali Al-Meghareff, chairman of the Libyan Arab Domestic Investment Company which produced the prototype, billed it as a revolutionary in the automotive industry.
The Saroukh el-Jamahiriya (Libyan rocket) is a 5-passenger saloon in a metallic Libyan revolutionary green with tinted windows.
3) BIRKIN CARS (SOUTH AFRICA)
South Africa-based car manufacturer Birkin Cars was founded in 1982. It is well-known for its vehicle S3 Roadster, which is a kit-car copy of the Lotus Super 7.
John Watson is the founder and owner of Birkin Cars. Since 1980, the company has expanded many times but has retained its base of operations near Durban, South Africa.
2) PERANA PERFORMANCE GROUP (SOUTH AFRICA)
Perana Performance Group automobile was founded in late 2007. This South African car developer is located in Port Elizabeth.
The company’s cars are manufactured in their hi-tech plant of Hi-Tech Automotive & Superformance. Perana cars include the Z-One.
1) LARAKI (MOROCCO)
Laraki is a Morocco-based company, which was established in Casablanca in 1999 to manufacture and sell luxurious high-performance sports cars.
Fulgura, Borac and Epitome are some models offered by Laraki. Moroccan designer Abdeslam Laraki is the owner of Laraki.
